A modest makeover at Søndervang Nursing Home made all the difference

THE CLIENT BRIEF

The Søndervang nursing home is located in a rather worn down five story building in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen. This building is undergoing a planned renovation in five years time, but both staff and residents needed a bit of freshening up of their surroundings.

OUR SOLUTION

In collaboration with Essensen, we have done a makeover with a lot of references to nostalgia, but with a modern twist. This is seen in both wayfinding, based on retro script fonts, and art work inspired by i.e. cross stitch embroidery. This, in combination with photo posters, showing beautiful local scenery, and printed on felt, gives the residents suffering from dementia, some recognizable input.

All wall surfaces got freshened up with bright white, with pink details. For the stairwells we have used a pink felt, starting with a dark shade on the lower floor, and getting a shade lighter with each floor upwards – and use poetry from the ‘good, old days’ as humorous decorations on the walls.
